Got a question about eSIM? We’ve got you covered.
Much like a regular SIM card, an embedded SIM (eSIM) identifies your device virtually to provide network reception. Unlike a physical SIM card that must be inserted and removed, an eSIM is installed directly into your device. You can switch carriers and networks easily with an eSIM, without swapping out a physical SIM card.
eSIM with Opera is a travel data service that keeps you connected abroad without swapping physical SIM cards or paying roaming fees. eSIM with Opera is powered by holiday.com. Choose a data plan for your destination, install the eSIM once, and top up whenever you travel.
To get an eSIM with Opera, you’ll need Opera for Android. From there, just choose a data plan for your next destination and install the eSIM on your device. eSIM with Opera is powered by holiday.com.
Once you’ve added a data plan and installed your eSIM with Opera, your data connection is established automatically when you arrive in your destination, as long as data roaming is on.
To turn on data roaming:
You should see LTE/4G/5G in your device’s signal status once connected.
eSIM with Opera offers three one-off data plans:
Each plan is a one-time purchase — there’s no subscription. Top up with another plan whenever you need more data.
eSIM with Opera is powered by holiday.com with their top network providers to give you a high-quality, reliable data connection wherever you go. Your actual speed may vary depending on the network operators at your destination, as well as factors such as location and signal strength.
Data plans need to be activated within 365 days (1 year) of purchase. This does not affect your plan’s indicated duration. For example, if you activate a plan on day 364, you’ll still enjoy its full duration from that point.
As long as your device is eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked, you should be able to set up eSIM with Opera without any issues. Note that devices originating from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau may not support eSIMs. If you’re unsure, check our compatible devices list or your device manufacturer.
Samsung: Tap Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM. If you see “Download a new eSIM”, your device is eSIM-compatible.
eSIM with Opera works on many Android phones. See the full, up-to-date supported device list.
Two common reasons: your device is carrier-locked (contact your carrier to unlock it), or it originates from a region where eSIMs are disabled. Devices from Hong Kong and Macau generally don’t either. Some device versions may not support eSIM — check your device manual or the compatible devices list.
On a supported, carrier-unlocked Android device with a stable internet connection:
Note: once installed, your eSIM cannot be moved to another device or reinstalled if removed.
Yes. You can purchase a plan in advance and activate it any time within 365 days of purchase. You’ll need internet access when installing your eSIM, so we recommend installing it before you travel.
You can top up any time — it’s quick and requires no further installation or setup. Choose your destination, select a data plan, and complete the purchase. Your new data is added to your existing eSIM.
Yes. Your account uses a single eSIM, but you can buy multiple data plans and top up whenever you need more data. There’s no need to install a new eSIM each time.
Each Opera for Android install uses one eSIM. You can buy multiple data plans and top up on that single eSIM for all your trips.
Yes, as long as your device supports dual SIM (a physical SIM plus an eSIM). After activating your eSIM with Opera, you can keep using your regular SIM’s phone number for calls and texts, while the eSIM handles data only — saving you expensive roaming fees.
No. You install your eSIM once and simply add a data plan for wherever you’re going. No reinstalling required for subsequent trips.
If you see no signal bars, a phone searching for signal, or “No connection” after activating your eSIM:
If you’re still stuck, contact support.
If you have very slow speeds, only “E” (Edge) in your signal bar, or no data even though the eSIM is connected, try:
If the problem continues, contact support.
If your eSIM couldn’t be installed or provisioned after purchase, make sure you have a stable internet connection and a compatible, carrier-unlocked device, then try again. If we’re unable to provision your eSIM after a successful payment, the charge is refunded automatically. Contact support if you need help.
eSIM with Opera accepts credit and debit cards. Payments are processed securely by Stripe, so all card types Stripe supports are accepted. We don’t currently support wallets, PayPal, or carrier billing.
No. Every eSIM with Opera data plan is a one-off, one-time purchase. There’s no subscription and nothing recurring — you only pay when you buy a plan.
Applicable taxes and VAT are handled at checkout by Stripe, which acts as the merchant of record. You select your country during checkout so the correct tax is applied to your purchase.
If your card is declined, common reasons include:
Try again later with the same card, or use a different card. If it keeps failing, contact your card issuer for help.
No. eSIM with Opera has no hidden fees or additional charges — you only pay for the data plans you buy.
Payments are processed by Stripe, which sends a receipt for each purchase to the email you used at checkout. Keep these emails for your billing records.
You can request a full refund for an unused data plan within 30 days of purchase. Plans that have been activated or used are not eligible. Contact support to request a refund.

Yes. If your device is incompatible and you can provide proof that it’s not eSIM-compatible or is carrier-locked, contact support within 30 days of purchase to request a refund.
eSIM with Opera is flexible and commitment-free — there’s no subscription, so you can simply stop using the service whenever you wish. If you’d like a refund, check whether you’re eligible and contact support within 30 days of purchase.
eSIM with Opera is committed to protecting your privacy. We don’t use your eSIM identifiers or personal activity to profile or market to you. We collect minimal personal, device, and usage information only to provide, manage, and improve the service and to troubleshoot issues. For details, see the Terms of Service.
When you use eSIM with Opera, your device connects to a mobile network rather than relying on unsecured public Wi-Fi, which can reduce certain risks such as unauthorized access or traffic interception. Like traditional SIMs, eSIMs use industry-standard network authentication, and we apply appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect personal data.
There is no “Activate” button to look for. Your eSIM with Opera connects automatically once you arrive at your destination, as long as a few settings are in place. If your data hasn’t kicked in yet, check the steps below for your device.
